General information on specialist training in Germany

Doctor Service Training To exercise the medical work in Germany you need either the approval or occupational permit. The approval can be requested by all EU citizens with an EU diploma. There is no time limit and it is valid in the whole of Germany. The occupation permit, however, is time to a maximum of 4 years and locally to a maximum of a federal state. It may be withdrawn by doctors from countries outside the European Union or European Economic Area and Switzerland or even as a temporary occupation permit by doctors with the European Union citizenship, but who are in possession of a non-EU Diploma.

The competent authorities may permit exceptions in some justified cases in regard to certain countries. This includes the existence of a formal request of the foreign government, which confirmes the appropriateness of the work stay in Germany and the willingness of the candidate to return…..

Details for specialist training

Doctor Service Detail The training, which also ends in general medicine specialist with a diploma (the so-called specialist recognition), takes 5 to 6 years according to the specialist.

Training shall be operated under responsible direction of authorized doctors (who are authorized by the Medical Board) in a university centre, a university hospital or in an approved establishment of medical care, including the established practice of a doctor.

During his time as training assistant the doctor has to meet the guidelines and fullfill the catalogue and can then register for the specialist-exam in his respective Medical Board.

After an oral discussion in an occupation of three doctors, of which two must have the recognition for the test area, the audit committee comes to a decision concerning the successful completion of the training (for example, to specialist).

The training for specialist and subspecialist has to be performed in full-time and regular occupation basically position. This also applies to additional training.
